Sorry, but the tone of the question strikes me as really, really sad.

Here’s Ed. Ed is a plumber because his father wanted him to be one. It isn’t something he particular enjoys: he would rather have been a lawyer. But he got into the plumbing business because he didn’t want to disappoint his dad.

I think that’s sad. Here, I’m going to call it “Level 1 sad.” I think that Ed should pursue his own choice of careers. He can take his dad’s wishes as one factor, and add it to the host of other factors. He could then even decide that he wants to do what his dad wants him to. (And that wouldn’t strike me as sad at all.)

It will eventually need to be done in the event you run into a situation when you have a partner and a friend who can't stand each other and you get to the point where the friend, for instance, thinks that the guy was a lot more fun to be around before the girl came around (said as an example) so the friend tries to pull little stunts to break them up…..
